Border River Angling
by W.H. Lawrie
If you are (or hope to be) one of those who fish the Tweed, Gala, Whitadder, Teviot, Ettrick or Yarrow, you will find great pleasure and profit in the reading of this fine book.
Mr. Lawrie never dogmatises; he advises. He is too old a hand to think that one man can find out everything about trout, but his tips for acquiring knowledge will stand for all time. Observation is his slogan – not only of the fish themselves but of every plant, animal, insect or grub, living or dead, that is to be found in the rivers or near them. Through this observation he finds a what time of year and in what weather one should use wet or dry fly, nymph, upstream worm, beetle, grub, larva or minnow.
He gives informative notes on rods, reels, tackle, clothing and the other essential equipment of the angler – what to buy and how to care for it.
He ends his book with two “average days” – one in the Spring and one in the Summer – on the Tweed, introducing a fictional character, a local worthy who adds point to the author’s statements.
